Dr. Shirley Ann Jackson

She was born on August 5, 1946, in Washington, D.C., USA. She graduated with excellent grades from high school and then enrolled at the popular Massachusetts Institute of Technology, one of only 20 African American students there. Jackson became the first African American woman to earn a doctorate from MIT and the second woman to receive a doctorate in physics in 1973 in the United States. She is the eighteenth president of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Shirley Jackson directed physics laboratories and researched subatomic particles in the United States and Europe in the 1970s.

His research enabled the invention of the portable fax machine, the touch-tone telephone, solar cells, fiber optic cables, and the technology behind caller ID and call waiting.

This has improved communication among many people. The caller ID feature has given people the opportunity to detect known, unknown, and unwanted phone calls. And with call waiting, people receive notification of a new call while they're on another call.

In 1995, President Bill Clinton selected her to chair the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, where she held sway over the nation's nuclear industry outside the military. There, she founded the International Association of Nuclear Regulators, where she advises other nations on nuclear safety matters.

In 2014, she was selected to serve on Barack Obama's intelligence advisory board and in 2016 was awarded the National Medal of Science.
