In an increasingly digital business environment, maintaining continuity in communication channels is key to ensuring customer trust. One of the most sensitive aspects of this process is managing phone numbers: keeping them or changing them without affecting operations.

In this article we share with you the main ones conservation and renumbering strategies, the types of numbering available in Colombia, and how companies can adapt to technological evolution without losing contact with their customers.

Types of numbering in Colombia

Before defining a strategy, it is important to know the available options:

  • Fixed numbering: traditional, now 10 digits, starting with code 60.
  • Mobile numbering: SIM cards used in cellular devices.
  • Lines 01 8000: free for the customer, but with reverse charges for the company.
  • Lines 01 900: special pricing, where the company defines the cost of the call.
  • Short numbering (1XY, #XYZ): used by entities such as police or public service companies.

Technological evolution of telephone lines

Companies should be aware that not all technologies allow for preserving numbering:

  • Analogous lines: old technology, prone to failure.
  • Digital lines: capable of simultaneous calls, but no longer in use.
  • GSM lines: conventional SIM cards.
  • SIP Trunks: IP lines that are delivered as Internet service.

Number portability: what should you know?

Number portability in Colombia applies mainly to mobile numbersHowever, in the case of fixed numbers and corporate SIP trunks, portability is not always possible due to technical limitations.

This means that companies must plan ahead for any supplier change or technology migration to ensure continuity in customer service.

Strategies to keep or change a number

1. Call Forwarding: When changing providers or locations, it is recommended to redirect calls from the old number to the new one.

2. Early Disclosure: announce the new issue on social media, website, emails, Google Business Profile, and print materials.

3. Informative audio messages: Keep both numbers active for a period and record messages to guide the customer through the change.

4. Migration to the Cloud: Leverage IP telephony and SIP trunks to ensure greater flexibility and cost reduction.

Conclusion

Managing numbering in companies is more than a technical procedure: it is a matter of trust and continuity in communication with customersWith a well-planned strategy, changes can be made without disruption, ensuring that the company remains available and accessible at all times.
